We’ve had a few dining room looks over the years, but none of them quite sat right with me which led to constantly switching things up. Our current house has a mid century architecture that really brings the outdoors in with all the windows and and so since we moved in, I’ve been slowly working on bringing pieces into our home that are not only quality, but feel timeless and organic in the home.
We recently stumbled across the most amazing antique elm wood table at a local antique store that was actually an island and I just knew it would be the most perfect dining room table. The wood grain is gorgeous and tells a story but it was raw/unsealed when we brought it home which is 100% not functional for a primary dining table, especially with kids. It also needed to be cut down to be the right height for a dining room table table. So, we cut the apron down a few inches and stained and sealed the table, bringing it back to life and I’ve never loved a table more. It has a ton of texture and movement and imperfections but it’s also super sturdy and solid and just perfect for the space, we just needed the perfect chairs and rug to compliment it.
I’ve loved Safavieh furniture for years. I’ve owned a few pieces by them and I’ve always loved the design and quality. When I saw the Reinhardt Rattan chairs, I knew they were perfect. The shape and the caning feel like something that might’ve been in the home back when it was built in the 1950’s, which I love. I went a little out of my comfort zone with the fabric seats, but I love them! They’re super sturdy and so comfortable. Literal perfection. Our rug is also from Safavieh. The texture is amazing for a high traffic area and I love the pop of red.
The last thing we added to finish the dining room makeover was the skinny console table. The space behind the table felt so empty but it’s not a large enough space to put a bulky console in. I wanted whatever went there not to take away from the rest of the furniture pieces and I didn’t want it to feel too cluttered. Of course, I couldn’t find anything slim and long enough so we spent a Saturday afternoon building this one and it turned out exactly how I hoped. It’s a subtle addition but gives us a place to display pottery/art/plants which is exactly what I was going for.
